Juanita Collins "Cooks" (Big Mama) Devers
Juanita Collins "Cooks" Devers was born to Rev. Judge G. Collins and Lusettie Cooks in Leigh, Texas. After the death of her mother when she was three years old, she went and was raised by her grandparents, Rev. Henry and Millie (Perry) Cooks.
She attended school in Harrison County.
At the age of nine, she united with the Pleasant Hill CME Church. In the year of 1932, she joined the Shiloh Baptist Church under the pastorship of Rev. J. R. Martin.
After moving to another communtiy, she united by letter with the Union Chapel Baptist Church, Waskom, Texas, under the leadership of Rev. J. R. Reddix.
In 1962, she reunited again with the Shiloh Baptist Church, under the leadership of Rev. C. B. Black.
She served as Assistant Secretary of the Mission, Second Assistant Secretary of the Senior Choir, and worked faithfully all over the church and community.
On December 24, 1931, she united in Holy Matrimony with Mr. Clarence Devers, to this union, eight children were born. They are: Two daughters, Settie B. Dorsey and Martha Downs; Six sons, Mr. Clarence M. Devers, Mr. Marshall Devers, Mr. John Henry Devers, Rev. Larry M. Devers, Mr. Raymond L. Devers and Rev. A. Bernard Devers, I.
At her death, she had one sister, Mrs. Vivian E. Hilbren, 34 Grandchildren; 16 Great Grandchildren, eight brother-in-laws, six daughter-in-laws, two son-in-laws and a host of relatives and friends.
